Took a closer look at my table top a few days ago, and realised that there are four little ant carcasses littered around, stuck below the glass that covers the table. I have no idea what made them traverse the great white expense below the glass cover, since there is no way I could get food stuck so far from the edge of the glass cover. Plus I had just cleaned the table top under the glass last week.
Their little bodies looked emancipated, so they obviously died of starvation. I have never seen a starved ant before. They are usually either snuffed out upon discovery or they manage to scurry away fast enough. Looks quite interesting.
And it is weird how they managed to get in and not be able to get out again. Logic says that if they managed to get under the glass, then they could have gotten out the same way again. My table top is no galaxy black hole. Then again, I am not an ant. I suppose to them, my table top must have looked like a big desert of endless white. I guess they just gave up...
I guess I have to clean the table again next weekend before CNY proper, a pain in the ass since I would have to remove the PC monitor and all other sundry stuff, including the heavy glass cover off the table. Well, I did consider leaving them there for further observation. It would be interesting to watch as their little bodies disintegrate further, and finally leaving just a pile of dust. The thing about ants is that they die cleanly....no blood or gore, and in this case, no squashed body parts. So leaving them there to rot is probably not as gross as it sounds.
But the thing that is CNY dictates that we begin the new lunar year clean and bright, so I guess my scientific observatory would have to go.....
